Pre-Degree Foundation Course (January to July) and Foundation Course (June -August)
Pre-Degree Foundation Course I is offered at the beginning of every year and the programme runs from February to July. Foundation Course II is from June to August. The purpose of both courses is to prepare students for the Diploma in Law and Diploma in Economics/Social Sciences programmes of the University of London commencing in September each year. The courses are of utmost importance to students pursuing further education in the respective fields as they give a substantial knowledge on subject areas prior to commencement of the Diploma and Degree programmes.
During the six months (February – July) and two months (June – August) study periods, the students will be exposed to a range of subjects:
As the subjects are related to law, the students gain the knowledge and skill that stimulate their thinking capacities, analytical abilities and research skills, which create a keen interest in students hoping to pursue a Diploma in Law and LLB in September. As effective advice and guidance promotes interest in students they tend to read more legal books appropriate to their level of knowledge, prior to the commencement of the Diploma or Degree programme, making them better equipped with basic but necessary knowledge of law. Therefore Foundation students are at an advantage over others enrolled for the Diploma or LLB. Simultaneously, they are more in command of grasping the subject knowledge too. In addition to the law subjects, the students are given a thorough knowledge of English Language, especially, Academic Writing, Reading and Presentation Skills.
The Pre-Degree Foundation (February-July) and the Foundation Course (July-August) conducted every year at Royal Institute of Colombo create an ideal opportunity for those hoping to follow the Diploma and Degree programmes in Economics/Social Sciences at University of London commencing in September each year. The students are offered a variety of subjects pertaining to their field of study.
The students who choose to follow one of the Foundation Courses will benefit as they are exposed to a range of subjects offered at University of London and get a substantial knowledge of the nature of the subjects too. The essential feature of the students who follow the course is that they are far more likely to be successful in getting used to the system of study at university and tend to be better prepared to their chosen Diploma or Degree study programme.
